Defeating air targets is not one of the primary tasks of combat or support helicopters, but the war in Ukraine has proven that it is important from the point of view of the survivability of rotorcraft on a modern battlefield. To meet these needs, ITWL, acting in a consortium with Mesko, CRW Telesystem Mesko and WZL1, has developed the LZR Piorun air missile system.

LZR Piorun can be integrated with most helicopters used by the Polish Armed Forces, especially combat and support helicopters

This project, financed by the National Centre for Research and Development, aimed to develop and produce an air missile system designed for armed of helicopters, which would use Piorun anti-aircraft missiles, manufactured by the domestic industry.

A mock-up of the LZR Piorun system was presented at the ITWL stand, consisting of the Universal Carrier Beam of the System and two missiles in launch containers. The Universal Carrier Beam of the Set allows the LZR to be used on various platforms. So far, the LZR has been integrated with the Mi-8/17, Mi-24 and W-3PL Głuszec helicopters.
The LZR Piorun is designed to defend the helicopter itself and destroy enemy aircraft and UAVs, within the full range of the platform operational speeds and flight altitudes.
The Universal Carrier Beam of the Set allows for the carrying of two Piorun missiles in launch containers and is equipped with the necessary power sockets, and in the rear part there is a socket for four tanks containing a coolant for the seeker head detector (two per launcher). The set interacts with the on-board weapon control system via the MIL-STD-1760B data bus, and allows effective use of missiles.
Ultimately, the LZR Piorun, unlike the demonstrator shown at MSPO, is to use special launch containers for missiles, devoid of unnecessary mounting rails and connectors for the launch mechanism and probably equipped with an additional place for attaching to the beam. The undeniable advantage of LZR Piorun is that all components of the system are manufactured in Poland, which means that it is completely independent from foreign supplies.
