The Border Guard is the second service, after the Polish Army, interested in the latest 5.56 mm MSBS-5,56 assault rifles. The weapon is now being put into production at the Radom-based Fabryka Broni. The first hundred units of the pre-production batch are to be completed within a dozen weeks or so.
The old license-built AKM/AKMS rifles for the Russian 7.62x39 mm ammunition still remain the primary firearm of the Border Guard. They were gradually phased out and transferred to Agencja Mienia Wojskowego (AMW; Military Property Agency), which then re-sold them. The events in Ukraine have resulted in halting the transfer of the Kalashnikovs to the AMW.
The AKM/AKMS remain in service until their successor appears, already designed for NATO standard ammunition. The Border Guard originally even wanted to take up the M4 variants previously used by Special Forces commandos, but these proved too worn out. Currently, the Border Guard HQ plans to rearm their officers with new firearms that use the 5.56x45 mm NATO ammunition.
Representatives of the Border Guard signed an agreement with the manufacturer, according to which they will receive over forty pre-production MSBS-5,56 rifles for testing. Since certification testing was completed a year ago, this means that once the hundred rifles have been completed, they can be delivered for testing. Certification confirms that the standard MSBS-5,56 in the classical layout is safe, meets the requirements and can be used normally. This opens up the possibility of selling this weapon to customers outside the Ministry of Defence, including Polish uniformed services.
